PATCHELL STAINLESS

Ian Patchell founded the parent company in 1973, the core business at that time being the design and manufacture of log transport equipment, primarily on-highway and off-highway trucks and trailers. The company has also been involved in the design and manufacture of a wide range of products including, steel slab carriers, tankers, conversion of excavators into bush log loaders, specialised heavy haulage, bin trailers, and log debarkers.

Partly as a result of a major logging downturn in 2004, the company purchased two additional businesses to build its product base in heavy transport. One was a stainless steel fabrication company that produced a wide scope of stainless steel products including stainless tanker truck and trailer units. This is now Patchell Stainless, which is solely focused on the stainless tanker market (i.e. milk tankers). At present, the company is well on its way to being the leading producer of heavy transport in New Zealand. Patchell Stainless is part of the Bay of Plenty Lean Manufacturing Cluster and has recently initiated a drive to implement lean into the business.

As one of the few manufacturers to have a full design team in-house and one of even fewer to be granted a Deed of Appointment as self-certifying engineer/manufacturers, Patchells is often held up by LTSA as a model of industry standards.
